Pad Ka-Prao (Thai Basil Pork) ผัดกะเพรา

This is one of my favorite Thai dishes because it is sweet, fragrant (from the basil and fish sauce!) and deliciously spicy! [Note: This is a non-spicy version of the dish because I was cooking for a milder crowd that night!] I remember Jas and I having this at JJ Market in Bangkok, and it was just so simple, and so wonderful. Goes well with rice!

  • 1 pound minced pork
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium shallot, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 cup chopped basil
  • [optional] 2 birds eye chili (but regular red chili works too), sliced

In a large heated pan, add the oil, and fry the garlic until fragrant.

Add the pork and shallots, then fry until the pork is half-cooked.

Add the fish sauce, sugar, basil leaves and chili, and fry until the pork is fully cooked.

Serve with rice and enjoy!
