Boston Eats: S and I Thai @ Allston

A few months ago, just before getting back to school, Jas and I met up with Farid to try S & I’s famous pad thai. It was said to be Boston’s best pad thai, and for not that much money too! Farid’s my friend from Singapore who is at Harvard doing his Masters in Epidemiology at Harvard. (Don’t laugh, I have smart friends too!) We played in NUSSO for years, and I went with him to buy his double bass. He actually started as a flutist, but now plays bass with the Harvard Jazz Band when he’s off-work from smart things.

S & I is a teeny tiny little Thai food shop on Brighton Ave. It was a bitch to park there, so do take that into consideration if you’re driving. The place is run by a Thai people (I can tell, because they are speaking Thai) and so  you can be assured that you’re getting nothing less than authentic here. Delicious food, friendly service, awesome prices – you bet I’ll be back!

Pad Thai – $6.95: Sweet, tangy and a good portion for only $6.95! It comes with chicken and shrimp – just like in Thailand – and also comes with a side mesclun salad that is beautifully dressed, just so you feel less unhealthy for downing an entire plate of pad thai. It’s delicious, and similar to the pad thai at Tree Top Thai Cuisine near us (also run by Thai people.) It tastes just like in Thailand! I don’t know if it’s the best pad thai in the Boston area, but it’s the top two pad thais I’ve had in the Boston area (the other being the one from Tree Top.)

Chicken Satay – $4.95: Four large sticks of chicken satay – they surely do not skimp on the meat here! The meat was tender, juicy and well marinated. It was charred, which shows that they’re really legit. There are so many places in the US that refuse to properly char things because people are so afraid of that delicious char (carcinogen?) Anyway, these are great. Do order them. The peanut sauce was a little watery for my taste, but the satays really didn’t need any more sauce on it.
