Boston Eats: Tasty Burger @ Harvard Square

Tasty Burger in Harvard Square is one of my favorite places to get a good fried chicken sandwich, or a tasty burger *heh*. We’ve been there probably half a dozen times since it opened, and Jas’ new favorite burger (I say ‘new favorite’ because it has changed) is the Kahuna burger [one might remember it from Pulp Fiction.] The joint looks like a fast food restaurant, but it does have a rather quiet bar downstairs. It also serves beer, and has the Starvin’ Student special – $10 for a burger, beer and fries, – aptly named for being so close to Harvard. It’s on the expensive (or very expensive side of fast food), but hell, I like this place.

Tasty burgers come wrapped up like this. It took me maybe two trips to finally figure out how to open one of these guys. Even after figuring out, I usually just rip them open because it is the quickest way anyway.

Crispy Chicken Burger – $5.75: This is the closest I’ve got to Chick-Fil-A, without going to Chick-Fil-A. The chicken is crispy, tender and juicy, and the chipotle mayo adds another level of kick to the burger. It’s an expensive burger for what it is, but it is good, which is what keeps me going back. I’d go to Chick-Fil-A too, but I can’t bring myself to support them for being anti-gays. 😦

Cheeseburger – $4.75: A pretty decent cheeseburger. It is what it is. You probably won’t come here for only a cheeseburger though. Get something else! Try the Kahuna burger or Blue Collar burger or Mushroom burger instead! (I’ll blog about these when I remember to take a picture of them. I usually get too excited and devour them before remembering!)

Fries – $2.25 (Small)/$3 (Large): These fries look undercooked in the picture, but they are actually crispy and good. My preference would be for something thinner, but these are pretty good fries. If you want to dress them up, you can add any combination of cheese sauce, spicy cheese sauce, sausage gravy or chili for $2 extra! Now that really makes these fries awesome!

Green Monster Shake – $4.25: A mint and chocolate chip that gives a nod to Fenway Park (Bostonians just love our Red Sox!) A super thick and awesome shake! I wish they sold these in 4oz mini cups because that’s probably as much as anyone should drink. I bet there are 2500 calories in this 16oz cup, and I ain’t kiddin’!

In and around Harvard Square, there are several fast-food burger joints such as the famed Shake Shack and Flat Patties, but Tasty Burger is our favorite! We love their burgers and also their chicken sandwiches! Of course, Craigie on Main, which serves one of the city’s best burgers is just round the corner, but that is a completely different ball game. Burgers taste better when they’re from the fast food line, IMHO.

Anyway, we’ve been to Tasty Burger probably half a dozen times by now. These are from our most recent hungry trip–I had just finished rehearsing with the Boston Nonet at Harvard, and had come from 7 hours of back-to-back rehearsals (4 with the Nonet and 3 with NEP in Brookline.) Needless to say, I saw starving and exhausted! Tasty Burger has a pretty extensive menu (burgers of all sorts, chicken sandwiches, sides, desserts etc.) and specials for students ($10: cheeseburger + beer + fries).

Kahuna Burger – $5.75: Our favorite burger! It has pineapple, teriyaki sauce and grilled red onions. It’s super simple and the pineapple really adds a lot of sweetness that is a huge contrast to the tangy (yes, it’s tangy!) teriyaki sauce! You don’t get to choose how your meat is cooked, but it is cooked okay — medium-ish, and has a slightly crispy edge to it!
