Boston Eats: Alive and Kicking Lobsters @ Cambridge

My little brother was visiting for a few days, and wanted something local. What else could be more local than New England seafood? Unfortunately, he came just outside of lobster season, and we had to search long and hard for a lobster pound that was still open! Thankfully, Alive and Kicking was open, and I was so glad to not need to leave the city for good lobsters.

I’ve been to Alive and Kicking before. I love that it is in the city, yet had a lobster pound feel due to the outdoor picnic tables and having so many lobster cages outside. It’s a rustic place where you can get your lobsters alive, or order one for them to steam for you. Simple, easy and delicious!

Steamed Lobster (lobster only; no sides) – $14.95 for 1 1/2 pound: We got a lobster! It is exactly what a lobster needs to be. Fresh and delicious!

Lobster Sandwich – $14.95: This is what people come here for, and I’ve been here several times (mostly with out of town friends) for a lobster sandwich. The prices of this keeps climbing, and I’m not sure I’ll be back again for this because it is getting expensive, yet the filling keeps getting lesser each time I come. If you’ve seen this on Phantom Gourmet, do note that it is nothing like that on the show. It has way less lobster meat than featured. That said, the sandwich is always delicious. The bread is nicely toasted and buttered, and the mayo-lobster mixture is light. It is delicious, but it is surely not something I’d call a good deal.

Brought my friend Jake to Alive and Kicking, and realized that the prices have increased. It’s now $14 for a 1 1/4lb lobster (lobster only), $18 for a 1 1/2 lb lobster and $24 for two 1 lb lobsters. There you go – inflation!! 😦

Also tried their sodas! Root beer was good. Only $1.75 each!

20141206_125945It was so cold (it’s winter!) that the clarified butter solidified almost instantly! Yes, you still eat in the tent. There was heating, but it was not turned on. 😦 [This is in New England December…]
