Boston Eats: Asian House @ Sullivan Square

J and I met with our friend MX, visiting from Long Beach CA (we visited her last winter too!) for dinner before heading to another friend’s wedding party at Charlestown. We were poking around for food in the area and chanced upon Asian House Restaurant in Sullivan Square (walking distance from the Sullivan T stop too!) It had great reviews and it said it served Asian fusion cuisine. Intrigued, because I still have no idea what makes things Asian fusion as opposed to indian/french fusion – the vagueness of it bothers me – we decided to head in to check it out.

From the outside, it looks like another crappy Chinese takeout place, but inside, it was actually very clean and nice. There was glassware on the table that really struck an impression, for whatever reason.

Country Pad Thai (with pork) – $9.95: Excellent dish! Not to oily, and the perfect balance of spice (not very spicy), sweetness, tartness and flavor (I think they have fish sauce and ketchup in there.) You know how sometimes pad thais are too sweet? This one definitely was not too sweet and was perfect. Generous portion – had it for lunch the next day and was still very full, and no skimping of ingredients at all! I recommend getting this!

Mango Curry (with Chicken) – $11.95: J got the mango curry and it was very good too. He finished all of it in one sitting, and I managed to try some of it. The mango cubes really added a nice sweet touch to the dish. All the veggies were perfectly cooked and added freshness to the curry that was much needed, because the curry sauce was so deliciously thick and flavorful – just like the curries I know back home. Thumbs up for this one as well.

The food at Asian House was definitely one of the better ones I’ve had, but the service was very very slow. We waited for 25 minutes for our food, even though there were only two other people eating there at that time. The wait staff was friendly, but we weren’t welcomed when we walked in and did not know if we should wait to be seated or find our own seats because the person at the cashier just did not bother to acknowledge our existence when we walked in. So, if I’m in the area again and have a tickling for Asian food (they have a wide range of Asian – Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese stirfrys etc.) then I’ll be back, but I wouldn’t make a trip here just to get an Asian fix.
