Boston Eats: N&H Saigon Subs @ Randolph

On our first free half-Saturday after we got married, we decided to go to the Blue Hills Reservation for a hike. It’s been an extremely busy time since the wedding, with my parents visiting and J playing two shows with the Regal Music Theater, we hardly had days where we were free at the same time. Anyway, after our hike at the Blue Hills, we were looking around for something quick and delicious, and stumbled upon N&H. Actually we didn’t really stumble upon it. Yelp did!

I was very excited when I saw a Vietnamese sandwich shop on our ‘nearby’ list. I love banh mi – I had it every single morning for breakfast on all my trips to Ho Chin Minh City and Hanoi (been there three times!) It is that good, and the stuffings are varied enough that I never actually got sick of it. Hah! I got the banh mi thit nuong (grilled pork banh mi), and I will definitely try the cold cut banh mi because I saw that they had the Vietnamese sausages and cold cuts – so very exciting!

Banh Mi Thit Nuong (Grilled Pork Banh Mi) – $3.95: For the price, this was an excellent sandwich. You get a beautifully grilled marinated pork slices on a crisp baguette that has pickled carrots and radishes, mayo and cilantro. It was really quite good! If it were a $6 sandwich, I would have wanted a pate spread and more pickled veggies in it, but it was A-OK for the price. I wish I ordered another one, it was really that good!

Chicken Spring Rolls – $3: These were good too. They weren’t freshly fried, but they were still crisp. The filling of ground chicken was flavorful, and reminded me of good chicken empanadas. The accompanying sauce was a little bit of a let down. It was salty and not sweet, sour or tangy like I had expected. Pretty good for $3!

Mango Slushie – $3.50: A nice cool drink for our post hike. I probably wouldn’t have gotten this if we weren’t hot and sweating like pigs. It was a very smoothly blended slushie with a slight fake mango flavor. Not the best thing in the world, and probably not worth $3.50, but it did quench our thirst and cool us down a little. I’d get another sandwich if I were me.
