J and I were in NYC again and were meeting some Big Apple friends for dinner. They suggested S’MAC. We trusted them with this decision seeing that they are New Yorkers who know their hood. S’MAC is actually short for Sarita’s Mac and Cheese, and the owners are Indian. They serve up wonderful variants on the all-American mac and cheese though, and it is delicious!
The mac and cheeses come in a variety of sizes–nosh, major munch, mongo and party! If you aren’t too hungry, or are a teeny weeny bit health conscious, then the nosh is good for you. It is just enough for one, but leaves you with enough stomach space to yearn for that one more bite. J and I shared a Cheeseburger major munch and a Cajun nosh. We’re not the type for diets, and we like to be full after dinner. A nosh and a major much was exactly what we needed and the portion size was perfect. If you’re unsure, you can check out their wall, where they have a skillets up for size.
They also have this sample platter that has EIGHT different varieties of mac and cheese on one single skillet. If you’re OCD like me, rest assured that each eight of the skillet is separate from the others, so there is little intermingling between varieties. The eight varieties on the sample platter are Parisient, Napoletana, All-American, Cheeseburger, 4 Cheese, Cajun, Alpine and La Mancha. *yum*
Cheeseburger – $6.75/$10.25/$17.75/$44: From the website: For the Hearty Meat Eater! Cheddar and American cheeses combined with seasoned Ground Beef. I loved this one. If I’m ever having mac and cheese again, it will be this. I love how this tastes exactly like a cheeseburger, but with mac and cheese as well. It is really the best of both worlds, and my favorite one among the two we got.
Cajun – $7.75/$11.25/$19.75/$50: From the website: If you are looking for some kick, here it is. Cheddar & Pepper Jack cheeses, andouille sausage, green pepper, onions, celery, garlic and, of course, some genuine Cajun seasoning. The Cajun variety had a lot more going on than cheeseburger, but the one thing that stood out to me was how the veggies never really got integrated into the texture of the mac and cheese. One thing about mac and cheese (for me at least) is the homogeneity of texture. The crunchy veggies definitely did not help that, which turned me slightly off this. Overall, it was tasty, but I much prefer the Cheeseburger mac and cheese.
S’MAC’s a really fun place. It is brightly colored and the space is just jiving with activity. Be prepared to wait because there was a crowd when we got there. Also, if you follow them on twitter, there might be a discount too!
