This is my favorite xiao long bao 小笼包 place in NYC’s Chinatown! It is so so so good. After a few trips, we realized that they did sheng jian bao 生煎包 really well too! I don’t remember how we stumbled upon Shanghai Cafe, but it is definitely one place we recommend to friends who ask! It’s one of my favorite places in NYC and I try to go to Shanghai Cafe every single trip to NYC. Yum!
Here’s the menu!
生煎包 Sheng Jian Bao (Fried Pork Buns) – $4.95: I could eat this all day! They are delicious and the bottoms are so crispy. They are just your puffed up versions of xiao long bao! When J and I go to Shanghai Cafe, we get 2 (16 pieces) orders of sheng jian bao and 2 (16 pieces) orders of xiao long bao. They are that good!
Here’s another look at the sheng jian bao.
小笼包 Xiao Long Bao (Pork Soup Dumplings) – $6.75 for 8: The yummiest of them all! I love these XLB at Shanghai Cafe. They’re better than those at Nan Xiang by far because the skin is a good thickness (not too thick, not too thin) and keeps all the delicious soup in. Best soup dumplings in NYC’s Chinatown!
Scallion Pancake – $2.25: These are as good as those at Nan Xiang, except cheaper and they keep their crisps for longer! Yummy!
Shanghai Pan Fried Noodles – $6.75: Another of my favorites at Shanghai Cafe. The noodles are so crispy and crunchy, and the sauce that is poured over it just slowly moistens the noodles over time. These have pork and shrimp in them, and a healthy dose of veggies. Yum!
