California Eats: Sushiritto @ Union Square [San Fran]

Food posts from my Left Coast concert trip to San Francisco: Kare-Ken @ Tenderloin, Dragon Eats @ Financial District, Bissap Baobab @ Mission, Cream @ Mission, Good Mong Kok Bakery @ Chinatown, New Golden Daisy @ Chinatown, Kobe Bento @ Chinatown, Red Blossom Tea @ Chinatown, Sushirrito @ Union Square, Boudin Bakery @ Union Square and Boxing Room @ Hayes Valley.

I’ve been dying to visit Sushiritto since I heard of its existence maybe a year ago on Reddit. If there were a love child from two of my favorite cuisines, then Sushiritto would be it! The idea is ingenious, and I was excited to see how it’s execution was!

When I got to Sushiritto at its Union Square location, the line was out the door. Despite this, the line moved rather quickly. Initially, it seemed like this could be a Chipotle-like here’s-your-tortilla/nori-pick-your-fillings type place, but one had to order strictly off the menu of about eight different combinations, with no substitutions.

The line, and how you walk through your order…

I decided that I wanted something with raw fish in it, and decided on the Geisha’s Kiss roll ($12) which has raw tuna, guacamole, pickled peppers and cucumbers, lettuce, Tobiko, lotus root chips and spicy mayo sauce. The fish was of okay quality, and they did give a good amount of fish in the roll as well. The addition of lotus root chips were genius, because this definitely needed some sort of a texture. The lettuce and pickled veggies added a very sour tang to the roll, and I personally felt that the roll would be much better without these as the vinegar smell was overpowering the tuna.

I would say, that after the hype, I’m a little disappointed in the execution of the roll. A wonderful idea, but taste wise, it did not balance out very well. I wonder if other rolls had similar issues. I would have to try more to see. One of the rolls that was really popular was the salmon samba. Maybe I’ll try that one next!
